Total ascent
15,002 feet
Moving average

Weather
Cloudy with sunny
intervals and icy winds on the moors very cold except for brief
intervals in the sunshine.
After an
8.30am start we progressed well up to Old Bess Hill with the curlews
flying overhead singing their song to cheer us against the biting
cold wind. Ickornshaw Moor was not as bad as expected and we
continued to make good progress over the moor and passed the
moorland chalets into Ickornshaw.
Onward and
up over Cowling Hill and down to Lothersdale. Here we were tempted
into the Hare & Hounds for sausage baguette. Refreshed we set
off up again passed fields of buttercups dancing in the wind. From
Pinhaw trig point we saw our first glimpse of Pen-y-Gent. The day
then started to drag as our legs were getting tired and it seemed to
take forever to reach Thornton in Craven and eventually East Marton
at 5.30pm.
We have now
met up with other Pennine Way walkers.
We had a
nice evening at Ponden House with the two Mikes and
Jacqueline & Dean and wish them all well.
Ian who we
met on the moor today and again at Lothersdale is walking alone so
we hope he keeps on smiling all the way to Kirk Yetholm.
Well off to
the pub now so will be in touch again tomorrow.
